Who Needs This Course

Essential for managers, team leaders, supervisors, and HR professionals who are responsible for supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their team members.

About this course

Do managers need mental health training?

Managers, team leaders, supervisors and HR professionals are the people who notice a change in someone first and decide what happens next, which is why this course targets them rather than the whole workforce. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess risks to health, and the HSE is explicit that work-related stress falls inside that duty.

The HSE Management Standards give managers the six areas to look at: demands, control, support, relationships, role and organisational change.

What does the course cover?

Seven modules over 2-3 hours: understanding common mental health conditions, the manager’s role in supporting wellbeing, recognising early warning signs, how to hold a supportive conversation, making reasonable adjustments, signposting people to professional help, and what it takes to build a mentally healthy workplace.

It does not train you to diagnose or counsel anyone. The line the course draws is between noticing and referring, which is where most managers get stuck.

What are the early warning signs at work?

Changes, not traits. Someone who was reliable starting to miss deadlines, short unexplained absences on Mondays, withdrawal from a team they used to talk to, irritability that is out of character, working late every night without producing more, or a drop in personal presentation are the patterns worth a conversation.

One of these on its own means very little. A cluster that persists for a few weeks is the trigger to ask.

What reasonable adjustments can a manager make?

Where a mental health condition meets the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability, having a substantial and long-term adverse effect on day-to-day activities, the employer has a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments. Common ones are a phased return after absence, changed or reduced hours, a quieter workspace, temporarily reallocating a specific duty, more frequent one-to-ones and paid time off for appointments.

Adjustments do not have to be permanent. Agreeing a review date makes managers far more willing to try one.

How is this different from the employee course?

This version is written around the manager’s responsibilities: spotting change in someone else, opening the conversation, deciding on adjustments and knowing where to refer. The mental health awareness course for employees covers the same conditions from the perspective of your own wellbeing and supporting a colleague.

Both are CPD accredited and both are included in the £35 Academy access, so teams often run the two together.
