No single law covers lone working by name. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess and manage risks to all staff, and that assessment must cover anyone who works alone. The HSE publishes dedicated lone working guidance setting out what good practice looks like.
Anyone who works without close or direct supervision. That includes home care workers visiting clients, cleaners and security staff on solo shifts, delivery drivers, estate agents at viewings, and anyone working outside normal hours in an otherwise empty building.
It covers how to risk assess lone work, communication and check-in procedures, personal safety and conflict avoidance, and what to do in an emergency when no one else is around.
Employers must assess the risks of lone work, put safe systems in place, train staff, and make sure there is a reliable way to keep in contact and raise the alarm. Lone working is legal in most jobs, but sending someone to work alone without these measures is not.
