About this course

What does a hospitality customer service course cover?

Seven modules across 1-2 hours: what guests actually expect from a hospitality business, communication and active listening, building rapport, handling complaints and difficult situations, exceeding expectations, telephone and digital contact, and measuring customer satisfaction so you can tell whether any of it worked.

It is written for guest-facing work rather than general retail, so the examples are the ones that come up on a section, on reception and behind a bar.

How should you handle a complaint in a restaurant or hotel?

Listen without interrupting, acknowledge the specific problem in your own words, apologise for the guest’s experience rather than arguing about the cause, fix it within the authority you have been given, then check back before the guest leaves. Escalate early if the fix costs more than you can authorise.

Speed matters more than the size of the gesture. A table left waiting while someone goes to find a manager has usually decided how the review will read before the manager gets there.

Does the course help with difficult or aggressive guests?

Yes, one module deals with complaints and difficult situations, covering how to keep your own tone steady, avoid mirroring aggression and know when to hand the situation to a manager or step away. Standard de-escalation ends where a guest becomes threatening.

Teams working late-night venues usually pair this with dealing with difficult customers, which goes further into confrontation and safe withdrawal.

Who is this course for?

Restaurant servers, hotel receptionists, bar staff, front-of-house managers and anyone in a guest-facing role. New starters can complete it during induction week, and it works as a shared reference point when a team has picked up habits from several different operators.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and where it is not, the customer can ask for the service to be repeated or for a price reduction. Knowing that changes how staff respond to a genuine failure, because the correct answer is usually to put it right on the spot rather than defend it.

Allergen questions sit in the same category. Front-of-house staff need an accurate answer or a clear route to one, and guessing is never an acceptable service recovery.
