Course overview

Develop essential child protection knowledge with this CPD accredited online course, designed for anyone who works with or comes into contact with children and young people. Safeguarding children is everyone's responsibility, and this course provides the awareness-level training needed to recognise the signs of abuse and neglect, respond appropriately to concerns and disclosures, and understand your duty to report. The course covers the four categories of child abuse — physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect — and explains the indicators that may suggest a child is at risk. You will learn how to respond when a child makes a disclosure, including what to say, what not to say, and how to record and escalate concerns through the correct channels. The course also covers the key legislation and statutory guidance that underpins child protection in the UK, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and the role of Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships. This training is appropriate for staff and volunteers in education, early years settings, healthcare, social care, hospitality, sports coaching, and any other environment where children may be present. Upon completion, you will receive a CPD accredited certificate showing the course you have completed.

About this course

Choosing an awareness course

This course brings together recognising concerns, responding to disclosures and understanding reporting procedures. It is intended for staff and volunteers who work with, or come into contact with, children and young people. The modules introduce types of abuse and neglect before looking at professional roles and responsibilities.

The awareness focus helps distinguish this course from further study of complex cases. Learners with foundational knowledge can compare Advanced Child Protection Awareness, which includes risk factors, multi-agency work and reflective practice.

For a named Scottish guidance curriculum, review child protection under NGCPS 2021, updated 2023. The safeguarding training guide provides broader background on the topic.
